Brave New World – Aldous Huxley
Why did I pick it up?
Finally, it is time! We all read and loved 1984 back in high school. Though it seems one can’t quite mention 1984 without bringing up its big brother, Brave New World, and vice versa. I decided it was about time I complete the latter of these two pillars of dystopian fiction.
What did I think?
Overall, it lived up to the hype. Brave New World has a much more weird-fiction vibe than some of its dystopian brothers. I was a little surprised and a lot in love with the plot that Huxley brought to the table. This novel kept me guessing, made me think, and left no shortage of wonderfully uncomfortable situations. Although the language was easy to read, I was a bit turned off by the out-dated perspectives. I personally found it hard to connect and get immersed in this “futuristic” world where the characters have such antiquated personalities and lifestyles. There is no doubt that this novel has wonderful, ground-breaking concepts, but the characters may not have held up to time as well as some others.
